The St Kilda Triangle, situated on the St Kilda foreshore, has long captured the imagination of both local residents and visitors. Since the destruction by fire of the Palace Entertainment Centre in 2007, the site has been used as a car park, despite its prominent location and the cultural and historical significance of the site.
In September 2022, the City of Port Phillip initiated a feasibility study for a live music and performance venue on the site. MGS Architects were engaged by council to prepare the feasibility study. As council’s design lead, I acted as the client representative, which included developing the design brief and managing the design consultant team.
The feasibility study achieved its core aim of investigating how a live music and performance venue could be accommodated on the site. The study culminated in a detailed report which outlines a sophisticated design for a cultural precinct that is responsive to both the site’s characteristics and community concerns.
This report was unanimously endorsed by council at the end of 2023.
